Where’s R2D2 When You Really Need Him?

February 17, 2012 By Kimberly A. Cook Leave a Comment

We writers face many obstacles in our careers, but none are more terrifying than the computer upgrade. This week I embarked on a seven point plan to increase my RAM (Random Access Memory), add a killer 2TB (terabyte) external hard drive, (I have Carbonite for perpetual backup, but I’m paranoid) upgrade to the Windows 7 operating system and then add a wireless router. After that, world peace should be a cinch.

Really, most of us would rather go into combat with a sharp spoon than face an upgrade. But with five pounds of after Valentine’s Day sale Peanut M&Ms, I advanced on my objective. With operational strategy and a strong support team, I expect this to be completed by Christmas; 2013. So in the spirit of upgrade wars, I present this Quirky Friday video to honor all those who have ventured into the valley of tech. May the chocolate be with you!

Purr More, Meow Less

On this Quirky Friday Valentine’s Day coming soon eve, what better role models for all of us than these YouTube sensation kitties. When thoughts turn to love and romance, who better exemplifies the close-knit love bond than these two talkative felines.

As President Abraham Lincoln once observed about marriage; “No matter how much cats fight there always seem to be plenty of kittens.“ Here’s to encouraging all kinds of love on this very happy Quirky Friday!

Scrat Goes For The Publishing Nut!

February 3, 2012 By Kimberly A. Cook Leave a Comment

Scrat is my hero. For those who are not familiar with the Ice Age movies, please rent, stream or buy them. Not only is Scrat cute, but I feel he accurately depicts the life of a writer. Scrat is the author/writer and the nut is publishing.

As self publishing and digital media rock and roll on the way to new technologies, we writers try to keep up. Just when we think we have achieved  success; another industry upheaval comes and we are chasing the nut once again.

For today’s Quirky Friday post, let’s all enjoy Scrat as he struggles to gain and retain that elusive nut! Writers have to keep at it, just like Scrat!

In Praise Of Biceps And Chests

January 27, 2012 By Kimberly A. Cook Leave a Comment

When folks ask me how I ended up in the Army at age 18, I should probably respond with “South Pacific.” The musical, not the geographic location. Raised on musicals, this one movie put all my favorites in one spot; tropical islands, romance, half-naked men, French accents, music and the military.

Compound the indoctrination with growing up in Portland, Oregon, the City of Roses, where the Navy ships ventured upstream every June for Fleet Week. About 3,000 sailors in whites? My fate was sealed. Can’t swim for beans, so the Navy was out for me; my dog paddle would not have passed the swim test.

The Army did teach me where my feet were. Repeatedly. So whenever I need a lift, I think back to this classic movie, with this fabulous song and agree; yup, there ain’t noth’in like a dame! (Or being one for that matter!) Happy Quirky Friday!

Head Em Up, Move Em Out!

January 20, 2012 By Kimberly A. Cook 1 Comment

It’s been a long short week around here in the land of ice, snow, rain and flooding. While winter is just getting started here in Oregon, spring will rise again! Going along with the open air theme, thought it might be time for a little round-up. Imagine the truck is a self published author and the cows are the current publishing industry. The words to the song fit pretty well too! This is what digital media is all about; writers rule!

Kick back, put your boots up on the table and enjoy the ride. Happy Quirky Friday!

Can You Dance Like A Lion?

January 13, 2012 By Kimberly A. Cook 2 Comments

by Kimberly A. Cook                   (Twitter@ WarriorTales)

January can be a tough slog after the fun and food of the holiday season. Cold weather, holiday bills in the mail, plus an unforgiving bathroom scale are sure signs spring is still a ways away. But then the Burpee Seed Catalog shows up in my mail box and I know everything will be okay; spring will come again!

Music is my antidote to many things, when chocolate may not be close at hand. So in the spirit of getting ourselves into the swing of this new year, it’s time to move it! With a little help from the cast of Madagascar Two and my favorite fabulous military penguins, we can take on any writing challenge this year! Happy Quirky Friday!
