Happy May Day Everyone

May 1, 2025 By Kimberly A. Cook

A bee hard at work in the azalea. Nature keeps working. That always gives me hope.

Just returned from a walk around the neighborhood on this warm, lovely afternoon. Wanted to take a posey picture to share with you. Sun is always a big deal here in Oregon and today is a bonus day of eighty-degree weather. May always heralds the true start of moving from spring to summer for me. Flip flops and naked toes are on the horizon.

While I can’t decide whether to do some mixed media art or take a nap right now, I’ve been doing a fine job of avoiding my current work in progress, Forbidden Warrior. I’m twenty-seven chapters in and this couple are having deep conversations and surprising me with things I didn’t know about them. While some romance authors strictly dictate what their couples do, I give mine a little wiggle room and they go rogue every time. That’s the fun part!

My obsession with Jane Austen continues as I discussed in my last post and now OPB/PBS is airing the short series Miss Austen on May 4 at 9 p.m. Why did Cassandra Austen, Jane’s sister, rush to locate the letters Jane wrote to her friend Eliza after the author’s death? What could have been in those letters that Cassandra wanted kept secret? Intrigue! Can’t wait.

Then there is my new HGTV fetish Castle Impossible, set outside of Paris with a young couple working to renovate/save a massive French chateau. This is home improvement on steroids. Plus, I don’t have to lift a brick, paint brush, hammer or timber and still get to visit beautiful France.

Another way to celebrate May first is Lei Day, a state holiday in Hawaii. The people of the islands celebrate the love, friendship, and spirit of Aloha symbolized by the lei. The flowery necklace is a symbol of the Hawaiian culture, their connection to the land, the people, and the Aloha spirit. Whether made from flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, or other natural objects, they are a way to demonstrate love, caring, and welcome.

I’ve enjoyed wearing flower leis on my visits to Hawaii. I even keep fabric ones on my dresser mirror to remind me of my island times. This morning, I switched out my Easter decorations for a Hawaiian summer flare in the house. Complete with Cabana Boy pillows!

Wishing you all a very happy May Day.

The Aloha spirit is a wonderful thing to embrace and spread.

Aloha!

Time To Climb A Tree?

May 18, 2018 By Kimberly A. Cook 1 Comment

This week I decided to take a break from the tv news. I still have the newspaper and online, but I wanted a mind recess. Seems like Takoda might have been thinking the same thing when he took off up a tree at the Oregon Zoo.

Actually, he’s after tasty snacks. I can relate. But fifty feet up a tree? I’m not built for that. So if life gets crazier than it already is, go climb a tree! But pack your own goodies.

Have a great, safe weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!

P.S. Hugs to all the folks on the Big Island and Kauai.

Time For Spring Break And Surfing!

March 23, 2018 By Kimberly A. Cook 2 Comments

by Kimberly A. Cook

Spring break next week here in Oregon. Makes me hark back to my youth of surfing movies, Beach Boys songs and the fact I can’t swim for beans. But I am fabulous at watching from the shore. I might try surfing in a pool; small wake.

This video may better explain my story last week about trying to get a rock out of the surf on this beach. Forgettaboutit!

The movie, “Ride The Wild Surf,” released in 1964. Love story too. In Hawaii. Explains so much about me and my girlfriends raised on these flicks. Still looking for Moondoggie…

Have a great safe weekend and Happy Quirky Friday! Cowabunga!

Time For An Aloha Break?

Since Spring has not quite arrived on the mainland, thought I’d let us take an online tour of sun and sand. Check out this National Geographic video on places to visit in Hawaii. One note of caution about number 10, Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline.

When we visited Oahu for the first time in 1974, I had a heck of a time trying to get a rock from the edge of the surf at Sunset Beach. The waves cut into the sand something fierce, leaving a downslope that the surf curl bites into. I did get the rock and completely soaked jean shorts and shirt. I did dry off pretty fast though.

Surfing at Sunset Beach or the pipeline? Only if you’re a pro!

Have a great, safe weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!

Time For A Surfing Pig?

Busy week. With that in mind, I decided we all needed a sun and swim break. What better way to warm up in the winter than surfing in Hawaii. With a pig. Who has his own board and two GoPro cameras. Because why not?

If you need to schedule some playtime in your life, take pointers from Kama, the hanging ten porker. Hang loose.

Have a great weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!

Time to head to Maui. Thought I’d take you all with me! On video that is. It’s going to be a snow/sleet/ice/freezing rain/locusts and/or zombies invasion this weeeknd; weathercasters haven’t figured out which. So let’s go to Maui!

Have a Happy Quirky Friday and don’t forget to put on sunscreen!
