Let The Holiday Chaos Begin!

November 18, 2016 By Kimberly A. Cook 3 Comments

Confession: I bought Christmas bows last night. But they were on sale! Since I saw my first neighborhood Christmas lights ablaze on Veterans Day, I’ve surrendered to the holidays. Figure it’s a grand distraction from everything else and it comes with food. Lots of food.

So in the interest of a holiday public safety announcement, watch this video and learn. Yes, Temptations cat treats are Spec Ops Cat’s favorite. He approved this message.

Stock up now for your furry friends!

Comfort Food Here I Come!

November 15, 2016 By Kimberly A. Cook 3 Comments

by Kimberly A. Cook                  (Twitter@  WarriorTales)

Between the time change, sick cat, election day, my job and Veterans Day last week, by the time Saturday arrived I could have used a cattle prod and a six-pack of energy drinks to get out of bed. Luckily a new purchase arrived and I was feeling dangerous.

Little Red bravely doing the water test. Such a trooper.

My mini pressure cooker. Two quart size. Nickname – Little Red. Since I’m trying to increase my cooking skills, I never would’ve attempted this piece of equipment but it’s small. Figured I might be able to handle it. Maybe.

First I had to go through the precautions and initiate a water safety test. Felt like I was back on drown-proofing duty in the Army. Thirty minutes later I hadn’t blown anything up or had leaking machine parts. Fabo!

Next on to real food. One of the many things that hooked me while watching this little gem on Home Shopping Network, HSN to us loyal fans, was being able to cook things quickly and keep the nutrients in without firing up the big oven.

img_2131
Even I can cut up potatoes. Love the skins for fiber and taste. How festive.

Decided to go for mashed potatoes on my maiden voyage. Cut up my favorite red potatoes, skins and all. Put in water. Locked down the lid. Pushed the potato button. How easy is that? Waited. About ten minutes later it beeped at me. Perfect potatoes!

I smashed them with the egg salad maker since I didn’t have a potato masher; then added milk and butter. Next was pepper and done. Wonderful. Ate the leftovers most of the rainy week. Emboldened by my success, I promptly purchased a potato masher. Every girl should have one.

IMG_2133.JPG
After the mash and before the ingredients. Can you smell the starch?

Think next I’m going big time, moving up to frozen pork chops. Little Red will cook frozen foods, just have to add time from the list in the book. Think I can handle the math.

Figure the worst that happens is I have to wipe pork chops off the kitchen ceiling; but since I haven’t fixed the ceiling yet from the peeing furnace that got torn out, who cares?

IMG_2134.JPG
Mix up the pepper and done! Actually, I could carry the entire mini pan and eat out of it, but I chose to go with a plate. Bring on winter!

Supposedly one can bake cakes, pasta and chicken wings in Little Red too. Seems I’ve hired a cook in the kitchen while I watch Football. Perfect.

Viva la Pressure Cooker! Viva la Comfort Food!

Got steam?

Time To Wander In The Woods?

November 8, 2016 By Kimberly A. Cook 2 Comments

Since today is Election Day, I decided it was time for a mosey on one of my favorite trails along the Metolius River in Camp Sherman, Oregon. We can all do with a pause that refreshes given the past eighteen months.

Picked out five pictures I took the end of September to share the peace, quiet and beauty of a nice stroll through the woods along a fly fishing only river.

IMG_4191.JPG
We started out late in the day and the golden light began to make an appearance. Smell the fresh air.
img_4194
I love this simple path through the woods which runs alongside the river. It makes me calm down just by looking at it again.

The sound of the water moving along and the slight breeze of wind through the trees.

Now we are headed back to the trailhead, but I can’t resist looking behind me and snapping another picture as the light continues to fade.

So when life gets a little crazy I can dream about relaxing in the little gazebo in the campground on the other side of the river.

This calming interlude brought to you by Mother Nature, the State of Oregon, the town of Camp Sherman and the U.S. Forest Service. Relax and enjoy the views!

Love And Grooming Make Fast Friends?

November 4, 2016 By Kimberly A. Cook Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs won an amazing World Series this week and the Cleveland Indians played their hearts out. Fans lost sleep across the nation, except for the Hawaii folks, but we all had a grand time watching this amazing series.

Which goes to show you miracles do happen and we all can get along. I don’t think it is any coincidence that Election Day is followed closely by Veterans Day.  In the military we work as a family, at times dysfunctional but always loyal.

So my fellow voters, if cats and dogs can find love and happiness, so can we. Have a great weekend, vote, and Happy Quirky Friday!

How To Get A New Closet

November 1, 2016 By Kimberly A. Cook 5 Comments

by Kimberly A. Cook                   (Twitter@  WarriorTales)

Ding, dong the beast is dead! No, I’m not talking about a witch, but my electric furnace/heat pump. When I bought my house eighteen years ago, I had this marvelous heating and cooling machine that worked great for about six years, then it started getting cranky.

img_2119-2
Spec Ops Cat makes one final inspection of the beast before it meets the demo team.

The first time was a winter night when I heard a Huey helicopter landing upstairs in my office; except there was no chopper. When I called HVAC guy to come inspect, it was a block of ice in the heat pump thingy that the fan blades were clanging against.

Turned on the emergency heat strips and proceeded to devise a gravity drain using my orange bucket and leftover aquarium tubing to catch the melting water. This contraption would prove invaluable over the coming years.

A year or two later sitting in my living room I heard drips. Never a good sign. There were not supposed to be drips. Followed the noise into the kitchen and found my ceiling was peeing water into the silverware basket of my dish drainer. From upstairs.

The drain line which goes outside from the heat pump had frozen, backed up the water and then more peeing ensued.

So there followed many more instances of peeing ceilings. After they ripped the innards out and put in bigger pipes in the unit I had the kitchen ceiling fixed. Not long after, more peeing once again. Gave up and left the hole as artwork.

So on a hot day in August, ninety-seven degrees to be exact, peeing and no cooling. Yes siree folks, the entire unit officially died dead.

Next came the bid rodeo. It came down to replace the electric furnace/heat pump with a split unit/furnace or with split unit/ductless. All in all the cost was either $12,800 or $13,600ish. Ack!

Doing my due diligence I called Energy Trust to ask the big question. Turns out the electric furnace is a major power suck, no matter how efficient.

Also, given how my row house is arranged, I wanted to improve the air flow and be able to regulate the temperature in each room; the only way to accomplish that was to go ductless. The best part? They would rip out the peeing beast, take it away and I would get a new closet. SOLD!

img_2120-2
Presto! Magic! It’s gone! This picture only lasted for about ten minutes before I started moving stuff into this space. Will do a makeover in the Spring and paint it pink. Because I can, that’s why.

So for three days in October two great guys and one wild electrician were in every room of my house, the crawl space and the attic while drilling, sawing and making noise. Spec Ops Cat was not amused. They also covered all the carpet with floor coverings, so the entire house looked like it had a diaper.

Found the crawlspace door I had not touched in eighteen years. Then spent time chasing Spec Ops Cat to stay out of it! Most of the time he camped under my bed, unless they were working in there too.

I could sit in the LaZBoy or at the kitchen table since every other area was a construction zone. Managed to sort my tax receipts and read.

They dragged the metal beast out of the house in a driving rainstorm complete with thunder and lightning, which proves my point it was the devil’s spawn. It didn’t want to go. I did pray they were not lit up as lightning rods and they got back safely.

img_2136
This is the big boy of the four units in the house. This heats/cools the living room, kitchen and dining room. Spec Ops Cat is still keeping an eye on it these days; it’s a new contraption. Yes, my living room walls are pink.

Now I am toasty warm. More so than I’ve ever been. I have to keep turning the heat down, the house is too warm. I’ve come to the conclusion the beast pretty much heated only itself in its final days.

Now  I have four remotes, one for each unit. And yes, I have already stuffed things into the new closet, a staging space for when I can paint it pink and move in four more bookshelves and my personal yarn store.

Can’t wait to see my heating bill. Expect it to go down forty percent. Old furnace used 180 watts, all ductless units use 25 watts. More money for books!

Do you need a new closet?

Nora News And Thriller!

October 28, 2016 By Kimberly A. Cook 1 Comment

by  Kimberly A. Cook              (Twitter@  WarriorTales)

Obviously I need two trash compactors to get my life organized. Missed another Tuesday post due to being tired and lazy. Or lazy and tired. And that’s the way it goes!

But in the meantime there is more Nora news! She met her new bear roommate Tasul. Now she is out and about learning to be a bear. Seems she might think she’s a person. A big white furry person. Welcome to Oregon Nora.

And for the rest of us who are scared enough by the current election shenanigans, how about a calming and quieter return to Halloween of old with the full-length Thriller! An oldie and a goodie. Happy almost Halloween! Bears and scares!

Have a great weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!
