Oregon Zoo

Are You Ready To Take Spring Snapshots?

Last Tuesday Velda the hedgehog at the Oregon Zoo predicted an early Spring. Seems Phil the Groundhog said the same thing, but Velda has a better record than Phil, so hedgehogs rock! True to both their predictions, signs of the coming Spring abounded this past weekend.

Real live crocus. Yes!

On my way to my writer group, I stopped at my carpool buddy’s house. She needed to take her dog Amos, a Corgi, for a quick walk before we left. Amos was not too thrilled about the “quick” part of the walk, he wanted to mosey. I couldn’t blame him. So while they were off finding the perfect tree, I wandered in her front yard taking photos.

How is this for a pink beauty? I have no idea what it’s called besides pretty!

My carpool buddy is a member of the camellia society and you can see why. I could not resist the pictures. So here are a few of my favorites.

Another stunner. How gorgeous is this?

Not to be outdone, these red berry things looked gorgeous too. They felt like the holidays but looked like Spring. How do they do that?

Pretty to look at but I bet you shouldn’t eat them; whatever they’re named.

Then the next day on my way back from the grocery store Super Bowl morning, I took a wrong turn but ended up with a perfect view of Mt. Hood. We say “the mountain is out” around here when we can see it, so this gorgeous sunny Sunday was the perfect time to get a picture of her with all her snow.

Gorgeous Mt. Hood, no longer naked, but with a fresh coat of snow. She’s a beauty!

So have camera will travel! Right around my own neighborhood. Are you ready to take Spring snapshots?

Is It Time For A Swim?

December 15, 2015 By Kimberly A. Cook 4 Comments

It’s been wet and windy here in Oregon and the last thing I’ve thought about is taking a dive in the pool. But the folks at the Oregon Zoo thought yesterday was the perfect time to open the new elephant pool!

And guess who is acting like a little submarine? Baby Lily! With the rest of us human creatures running around getting ready for the holidays and trying to finish our to do lists, Lily shows us what is really important; play time!

The Oregon Zoo’s new pachyderm pool is 12 feet deep and 80 feet wide and the water level can be adjusted to be deep enough for big boy Packy or make it shallow for baby Lily. Amazing stuff.

So while we humans are thinking about gray days and rain, the Portland pachyderms are having a blast on the beach at their new swimming hole. Maybe that’s a good lesson for all of us these days. Take time out to play in the puddles.

Know a good place to swim in December?

How About Cheetah Friday?

Ever played fetch with a cheetah? Bet not! But Ranger at the Oregon Zoo has keeper Beth trained to hit balls over the fence, then Ranger brings them back. How cool is that?

Who says cats can’t fetch?

And how good a photographer do you have to be to keep up with a cheetah playing ball? Fast!

Have a great weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!

Need Help Smashing Pumpkins For Pie?

November 13, 2015 By Kimberly A. Cook 2 Comments

If you’ve got some leftover giant pumpkins from Halloween you might want to use for pies, I don’t recommend letting Lily and her pachyderm pals help in the kitchen. See what they did to two giant gourds for the annual squishing of the squash.

I particularly like the way Lily straddles her food. A girl after my own heart! Our butts kind of look the same too.

Have a great weekend everybody and Happy Quirky Friday!

It’s Always Time For Cougar Kittens!

October 9, 2015 By Kimberly A. Cook 2 Comments

Another Friday and it’s time to check in at the Oregon Zoo. What better way to get started on the weekend than checking out these saved orphaned cougar kittens. Look at those paws and gorgeous faces. Cuddly now, but they will grow up to be very big cats! Listen closely for their big meows.

Huge kudos to the Oregon Zoo veterinarian staff who volunteered to take on the every four-hour bottle feedings in addition to their regular shifts. You guys rock!

Have a great weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!

HGTV For Elephants?

June 5, 2015 By Kimberly A. Cook 3 Comments

Very big redecorating going on at the Oregon Zoo for years and this past week was move in time! I don’t know if the “Property Brothers” could have even handled these picky clients, but the folks who designed the new elephant habitat gave them all the latest home amenities for our popular pachyderms.

Just in time for a sizzling hot weekend here in Oregon, the elephants get to roam in their new home, complete with large windows, then outside play area, elephant proof gazebo and auto feeders and misters! Nothing but the best for our lovable giants. Check out the action. I couldn’t resist all three videos.

Have a great weekend and Happy Quirky Friday! (P.S. Lilly is still SO CUTE!)
