There seems to be a baby boom at the Oregon Zoo. Now we have more lion cubs! It’s a kittenpalooza. Check out first time Mom Kya and the wonderful job she is doing. I am sure there will be more family films soon.

Happy Quirky Friday!

Time To Play In The Mud!

August 22, 2014 By Kimberly A. Cook 1 Comment

by Kimberly A. Cook                    (Twitter@ WarriorTales)

They may say these final hot August summer days belong to the dogs, but I think elephants know how to party too! At the Oregon Zoo baby Lily and her brother Sam are having a great time playing in the mud. What better way to cool off then making really big mud pie splashes!

Some of my favorite memories are playing with Match Box cars in the neighbor’s backyard, creating an entire road system for my yellow convertible and travel trailer to use. Dirt and a little mud and I was in hog heaven. Actually, those play days helped me get through the mud of Army basic training.

What is your favorite mud memory? Happy Quirky Friday!

How Do You Keep Cool In August?

August 1, 2014 By Kimberly A. Cook Leave a Comment

This has been one wacky and weird weather year around the globe. While folks are dealing with all kinds of storm challenges, we are in the middle of a two-week heat wave that was supposed to be only one week-long. Obviously we have an overachieving weather pattern.

Since us Oregonians freak when the big round sun thing comes out and really freak when the humidity thing shows up, it’s a good bet everybody is inside; except for the young folks floating the rivers. So this is how our Oregon Zoo animals are keeping cool. Happy Quirky Friday everybody!

Lion Cub Triplets Meet Your Very Big Dad!

March 28, 2014 By Kimberly A. Cook Leave a Comment

The Oregon Zoo put this great almost cute-meet clip up a couple of weeks ago and it has more than a million views. This is what happens when Dad gets to meet the lion cub triplets for the first time. Seems he’s a bit surprised by all the activity.

It’s hard to keep your tough guy image when the kids are crawling all around. He adjusted to the new brood just fine and was happily seen grooming the cubs later that day. Awwwwww. Don’t think the cubs were scared a bit!

Oregon Zoo Elephants Romp In Their New Digs

March 7, 2014 By Kimberly A. Cook 1 Comment

Back to the Zoo! Recently the ladies of the Oregon Zoo elephant herd, with the lovely Miss Lily, got to check out part of their expanding space. This elephant size remodel is being done in stages and with help from the pachyderms.

Seems sample lots of sand were brought in and tested by the elephants to find their perfect brand. Turns out our Portland pachyderms prefer that fabulous sand used on golf courses on their tootsies and it drains the rain really well.

So far the girls and babies have checked the place over, but the real test will come next with Tusko and Packy, the big boys. Since the trainers say Tusko “breaks everything,” can’t wait to see if we’ve built it “Tusko Strong” or not.

Check out what the ladies did in their new digs and how they inspected their new play toys. Happy Quirky Friday!

It’s Cougar Triplet Time!

Are these not the cutest guys on the planet? Besides the fabulous lion cubs we had at the Oregon Zoo, we also had three cougar cubs show up from a rescue. They are on their way to the East Coast  Tuesday to start their new lives – all together, two sisters and a brother.

I love a happy ending. Happy Quirky Friday!
