Sea Otters On Ice?

July 20, 2018 By Kimberly A. Cook 1 Comment

No, it’s not a new Disney ice rink show. It’s how our furry sea otters at the Oregon Zoo kept cool during our heat wave last weekend. Too cute for words! They even chew on the ice. Eddie, Juno and Lincoln are no dummies; ice in their kiddie pools.

Here’s hoping those ice making machines are ready for the next heat wave coming Sunday. Crank up those machines to keep our fine furry friends comfortable.

Everybody else do the same!

Have a great, safe, weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!

Sea Otter Awareness Week?

Can you believe it’s Sea Otter Awareness Week? I didn’t know about it until Wednesday, but it has been going on for a couple years. So in the interest of informing the public, zoos and aquariums had a #SeaOtterTweetOff  – talk about the quantity of cuteness.

In case you missed the posts, our own Eddie from the Oregon Zoo updated his basketball dunk video and went for the gold in the competition. But the Vancouver (B.C.) Aquarium also competed with rescued sea otter pup Hardy meeting 13-year-old Tanu for the first time. Adorable.

If you want to check out all the events before they end tomorrow, go to www.seaotterweek.org for all the info and to purchase the commemorative water bottle. Then we can all plan how we will celebrate next year.

I found out sea otters eat 25 percent of their weight every day. I’m a sea otter too!

Have a great, safe weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!

Can You Swim, Eat And Dry Your Hair?

July 21, 2017 By Kimberly A. Cook Leave a Comment

One reason I went into the Army is I can’t swim for beans. Do a mean dog paddle or glide? Yes. Breast stroke? No.  So when I saw this clip from the “Nature” television show with sea otters not only eating and swimming, but a momma otter blowing her baby’s hair dry and swimming, so impressive.

I can barely dry my hair standing on dry land, let alone swimming. Might be an electrical issue with the whole power cord thing too. That’s why those warning labels are on hair dryers because you know some idiot tried it. Once.

Watch these otters in action courtesy of the robot “Spy Otter” who snuck up and got these papparazi shots of the sea otters.

Have a great, safe, weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!

Otterly Adorable Zoo Baby!

September 30, 2016 By Kimberly A. Cook Leave a Comment

We are overwhelmed with cuteness here in Oregon. Not only are we awaiting Nora the polar bear’s debut next month, but we have baby otter Ottumn to watch too. Can you feel the love?

Not sure I’d like to learn to swim the way Mom drags the baby into the water, but it’s worked for them for generations. Cute squeaks too!

Have a great weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!
