Happy Wolf Moon Transition

January 2, 2018 By Kimberly A. Cook 2 Comments

by Kimberly A. Cook

The 2018 brand new clean slate is here. It’s like putting on a new dress for the first time, all expectations and perfect fit. To top off the start of the new year, we had a full Wolf Moon last night and we get another one the end of this month, an official Blue Moon. A two-fer!

IMG_2990
Last night’s super Wolf Moon from my backyard. Since moons have transitions too, think Mother Nature is trying to tell us something with the moon, the seasons and our lives – we’re all related!

The daylight is getting longer by a whopping seven minutes and I couldn’t be happier. Dreams of Fairy Rock Garden plans and lawn swing lazy days are just around the corner. Even for Pennsylvania. The daffodils will rise again. The crocuses are peaking their pointy heads out right now. At least in Oregon.

Resolutions are not my thing, I make goals. So when I transferred to my 2018 calendar I laughed when I noticed my 2017 goals would be my 2018 goals too. Not sure if that is efficient or unrealistic. Big goals? Get healthy, write and play. Then I have four smaller goals for the three big goals.

I worked on the smaller goals in 2017, but did not complete any. No matter what plans we make, life happens. So recycling 2017 goals is not a bad thing; it keeps me moving forward.

Reading the book “Transitions – Making Sense of Life’s Changes (Second Edition)” by William Bridges right now, recommended by a friend. Really enjoying it. Bridges talks about the three phases of transition:

  1. “an ending, followed by
  2. “a period of confusion and distress, leading to
  3. “a new beginning, for those who had come that far.”

I’ve always found that phase two confusion and distress period annoying. I liken it to that time right before I make a big decision; it feels like I’ve thrown chum into shark infested waters and I can’t figure out what to do while swimming with the frenzied sharks – very stressful.

Two questions Bridges asks at the end of Chapter Four really have me thinking.

  1. “What is it time to let go of in my own life right now?”
  2. “What is standing backstage, in the wings of my life, waiting to make an entrance?”

Great questions right? This book has been out for years and you can find it in the library, but I like to have my own reference copy. Pink highlighter is a way of life for me and they frown on that in library books.

So looking ahead to 2018, how will you answer questions one and two above? I like them because while we may not have figured out where we’re going, we can consider what to shed and what might be sitting next to us as options.

So when we feel like we’re floating around with feeding sharks, it’s nice to know other folks are out their bobbing along with us. Nobody has this all figured out.

Life evolves, whether we choose the transition or not. So, here’s to a great 2018 for all of us. Transitions Ho!

Bring On 2018!

December 29, 2017 By Kimberly A. Cook 1 Comment

It has been a really nutty year. Many times I felt like we were in a squirrel rodeo combined with a rat race and a bad SciFi movie. Imagine my delight to find out we are not alone, even the squirrels have wacko race events.

While we kick 2017 to the curb to start a shiny New Year on Monday, let’s practice the Golden Rule, be kind to others and help each other out. We’ve got work to do to save the polar bears and each other in 2018.

But this weekend it is chips and dip time. Regroup and gear up.

Happy New Year and Happy Quirky Friday! Hugs to you all!

White Christmas Memories

December 26, 2017 By Kimberly A. Cook 3 Comments

Happy Boxing Day! It’s a balmy 28 degrees here in Oregon and the ice and leftover snow are still on the roofs in my neighborhood. The unexpected freezing rain on Christmas Eve turned into fluffy snow in the late afternoon.

The glare of ice crystals on the bird bath on Christmas Eve, lit by the street lamp reflection. Birds will need ice skates!

Geared up with crampons on my boots and cookies and eggnog in my backpack, I hoofed it over to my Mom’s house at 2:30 p.m. for Christmas Eve eggnog and cookies. Walked carefully since one does not want to fall on their eggnog. The Army did teach me to find my feet on the ice. The walk back home through fluffy white snow and the quiet that only a holiday with a blanket of white can bring was magical.

The bird bath on Christmas Day. Since the birdie bath heater died, it’s now an ice rink. Must get to the store to replace the heater.

An emergency run for take-and-bake pizza on Christmas Eve morning by my sister worked out well to pre-position food for the holiday. We went with super easy Christmas dinner this year. Christmas pizza a first for us. It was wonderful with eggnog and cookies, plus some salad thrown in for good measure. Plus dark chocolate. ALWAYS dark chocolate.

This is the winter camellia blooming while hit by the freezing rain. Note my fabulous mini pink bunny trellis in the background. Did that this summer for color in the garden for the winter.

So I played with my camera and thought I’d share some pics from our little weather event. Forecast for more freezing rain, snow, sleet, locusts tonight. Something like that. So here are pics from a lazy photographer who basically stands on the front or back porch and takes photos. I blame the pizza and eggnog.

This is my laziest photo of all.  I’m a big Music Choice fan on Comcast. I love the holiday music which comes with fabulous rotating pictures. This is my favorite photo every year. Cookie conveyor! It dawned on me I could take a picture of the tv from my LaZBoy and share it. Truly the laziest pic of all. Almost Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays Everyone

With the holiday weekend getting into full swing now, it’s time to hunker down with friends, family, pets and relax. For a few hours this world slows down a bit, doesn’t stop, but takes a little break. Let’s celebrate our blessings, each other and fabulous goodies.

In our family the odd years have always been a challenge and this has been an ODD year. So here’s to eggnog toasts, holiday treats, and an even numbered year coming fast.

One reason we can all take a break is because we have military, law enforcement, fire, medical and transportation elves standing by to help if needed. A huge thank you to all our military, city, county, state and federal workers who watch our backs so we can party.

Have a very merry Holiday season everybody. Safe sleigh driving!

We Work In Heels!

December 19, 2017 By Kimberly A. Cook 5 Comments

by Kimberly A. Cook

This week is the final push for the holidays. We can do this. Between moving my Mom,  cleaning out her house and running Spec Ops Cat into the vet three times last week, I’m a little festively frazzled. Spec Ops Cat is doing well now. I could use a bucket of spiked eggnog myself. And one of his B12 shots. And a dump truck load of Christmas cookies.

So when times get challenging, I like videos. One of my favorite dance numbers is this one from “Top Hat.” Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, backwards, in heels, in a long dress with FEATHERS! Notice how she has to kick the dress up to keep from killing herself. Us women rock. The dance number really picks up about the two-minute mark, so hang in there.

For a holiday bonus, I’ve added the just released trailer for “Oceans 8.” All women. With and without heels. Can’t wait to see this. Happy Holiday rush week!

Totally Tinsel Time!

Holiday traditions make me happy. Watching “Disney’s Prep & Landing” is one of my favorites. Even though I own it on DVD, watching it on tv is fun. So Thursday night, Dec. 14, at 8:30 p.m. on ABC, you can enjoy it too. Or see it on YouTube also.

There is no doubt in my mind Santa has former special operators and military personnel running his operations. NORAD tracks him around the world for Pete’s sake. If you want to know more about when NORAD began tracking Santa, check here:

To track Santa go to www.NoradSanta.org

It takes a logistics village to get the jolly guy launched and back from his mission.

Have a safe shopping weekend and Happy Quirky Friday!
