Took a day trip down to Lincoln City recently and visited a bookstore I wanted to checkout, Robert’s Bookshop. When I entered, the maze of pathways and books thrilled my writer soul. There are few things I like more than winding through aisles, nooks, and crannies to discover used and antiquarian treasures.

This eclectic bookstore has everything from older books to vinyl records, poster art, and other collectibles. Be still my heart.

The children’s book corner came complete with a small rocking chair. The paperbacks were kept company by hardbacks and various posters and artwork on the walls. I kept moving into the warren of shelves feeling like Indiana Jones. A book quest is always a happy challenge.

Because I am a lifelong reader, I forged on until I discovered the romance section. Far back left corner, just so you know. A wide range of older paperbacks greeted my eyes. Even favorite vintage romance books. Score!

There were also surprising items, like a signed photo of Erle Stanley Gardner (Perry Mason author) and Clark Gable’s driver’s license. Those items are chocolate sprinkles for a bibliophile on a quest.  To say nothing about the miniature vintage paperback books wrapped in plastic to protect them.

Then I found two paperback copies of Gidget and Gidget Goes Hawaiian with actress Deborah Walley’s picture on the covers. Yes, I know Sandra Dee was the original Gidget movie actress. I always wanted to be Gidget, but swimming is not one of my skills, hence my Army days.

You can find Robert’s Bookshop at 3412 SE Highway 101 or online at robertsbookshop.com The shop is hard to miss. There is a 1967 Boeing 727-100 aircraft nose sticking out the side of the building in the parking lot. It’s a private office, no visitors allowed, but a heck of a landmark.

When we venture into September with Labor Day weekend in the rearview mirror, it means the start of the rainy season here in Oregon. And I’m good with that. Nothing like a soggy day to venture into the many Oregon bookstores, then curl up with a book at home accompanied by hot cocoa and cookies. Simple pleasures are the best.

Summer Honey Wishes

On a writing research trip to Hood River last week, I came upon this mug I had to add to my collection. I am a huge fan of bees, and honey too. Especially on warm buttered biscuits. Not only do the bees work hard to make the honey, but so do the rest of us worker bees to earn the cash to purchase the liquid gold.

On the eve of America’s 249th birthday, I wanted to say thank you to all my fellow worker bees this long holiday weekend. From the grocery clerks to the postal workers, the construction workers and the folks picking crops in the fields, we are all very busy bees these days. We are living in challenging times in the United States and around the world.

A special thank you to our military members serving around the globe, keeping us safe twenty-four seven, in the air, on the land, and under the sea. Every generation faces choices in the defense of democracy. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. Let us not forget their sacrifices. We have much work to do toward building a more perfect union for all.

Just as we need to help our neighbors, the bees also need help. Grow a pot of bee friendly flowers this summer. Getting your fingers in the dirt is good for the soul, and it helps the bees. Plus, seed packets are still one of the cheapest things to buy these days. With a promise of both beauty and bee support!

I was thinking of a favorite book I read in high school the other day, the wonderful Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury.

Think I will reread it this summer. I still have that original copy, but for some reason the print is much smaller than I remember. Things change.

But so can we.

Happy May Day Everyone

A bee hard at work in the azalea. Nature keeps working. That always gives me hope.

Just returned from a walk around the neighborhood on this warm, lovely afternoon. Wanted to take a posey picture to share with you. Sun is always a big deal here in Oregon and today is a bonus day of eighty-degree weather. May always heralds the true start of moving from spring to summer for me. Flip flops and naked toes are on the horizon.

While I can’t decide whether to do some mixed media art or take a nap right now, I’ve been doing a fine job of avoiding my current work in progress, Forbidden Warrior. I’m twenty-seven chapters in and this couple are having deep conversations and surprising me with things I didn’t know about them. While some romance authors strictly dictate what their couples do, I give mine a little wiggle room and they go rogue every time. That’s the fun part!

My obsession with Jane Austen continues as I discussed in my last post and now OPB/PBS is airing the short series Miss Austen on May 4 at 9 p.m. Why did Cassandra Austen, Jane’s sister, rush to locate the letters Jane wrote to her friend Eliza after the author’s death? What could have been in those letters that Cassandra wanted kept secret? Intrigue! Can’t wait.

Then there is my new HGTV fetish Castle Impossible, set outside of Paris with a young couple working to renovate/save a massive French chateau. This is home improvement on steroids. Plus, I don’t have to lift a brick, paint brush, hammer or timber and still get to visit beautiful France. 

Another way to celebrate May first is Lei Day, a state holiday in Hawaii. The people of the islands celebrate the love, friendship, and spirit of Aloha symbolized by the lei. The flowery necklace is a symbol of the Hawaiian culture, their connection to the land, the people, and the Aloha spirit. Whether made from flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, or other natural objects, they are a way to demonstrate love, caring, and welcome.

I’ve enjoyed wearing flower leis on my visits to Hawaii. I even keep fabric ones on my dresser mirror to remind me of my island times. This morning, I switched out my Easter decorations for a Hawaiian summer flare in the house. Complete with Cabana Boy pillows!

Celebrating Jane Austen

Some of my teacups surrounded by my two new Jane Austen books. It’s always time for a relaxing tea party and a good novel.

Want to escape?

Me too. So that’s what I did last weekend, I retreated to Jane Austen.

For me this meant rewatching Hallmark’s Paging Mr. Darcy and then streaming Austenland. And then I was down the research rabbit hole.

Discovered this is Jane’s 250th birthday year. Then I found a new book about the women authors who inspired Jane’s writing. Off to Barnes and Noble I went and pounced on that volume, then found a collection of all seven of her novels. Score! Snatched that up too.

Austen confessions. I haven’t actually read the books. Not growing up. Not sure how I missed her in all my high school literature classes. But I was reading Harlequin books from the git go. And a huge Shakespeare fan, so not sure how I got derailed. But then, I saw the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice. With Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden.

I know. Let’s all take a moment. In reverence. Make sure to breathe.

Then when Darcy strides across the fields?

Never in all my born days… Vapors. Swooning. Breathing optional.

I adore that film so much I have two DVD copies in case one gets scratched.

Say what you want about us Baby Boomers and our analog media, but the Army taught me; if you don’t have it, you don’t HAVE it.

Then I discovered something else.

It’s the 20th Anniversary of the movie and they are bringing it back to the big screen in selected theaters on April 20th!

Not sure my heart can take it. I checked locally and it is in three theaters here in Vancouver, Washington, and in Beaverton, Oregon, on April 18. Ladies and gents, check your theater listings. It’s movie go time!

Now, if for some unromantic reason you don’t prefer Jane Austen, you do you, but here are some other escapes.

Opening March 28th is The Penguin Lessons, which I didn’t know about, based on the book of the same name. A story of a teacher and his bird. Based on a true adventure. This is a must see for me.

Last night on Netflix I started watching The Residence, a murder mystery series set in the White House. It is brilliant. Of course, Shonda Rhimes produced it, so expect only the best. I stopped at three episodes. Not easy. Had to get some sleep. Back at it tonight.

Or go outside for a promenade.

It’s been rumored we might have three days of sun next week. Always a win.

Or hunt down where you can view other Jane Austen inspired movies from Hallmark like An American in Austen, Sense and Sensibility, and Jane and Love from 2024, or Unleashing Mr. Darcy from 2016. Or the gazillion others made over the years. Emma is a big favorite of mine too, with Ann Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, and Bill Nighy.

Right now, I am reading Undressing Mr. Darcy by Karen Doornebos.

Love is the greatest power on earth.

Happy Galentine’s and Valentine’s Days!

Happy Galentine’s Day Eve and almost Valentine’s Day!

As a romance writer, this is my season. It’s the best time to shop for Valentine goodies to decorate my home office. I start doing recon in January to get the good stuff. And this year I scored big time. A welcome mat with Snoopy mailing Valentine’s Day cards. On sale. For $13.99. (See above)

Pretty sure it’s staying outside until the Turkey mat switches in November. If I can get a perfect Valentine doormat on sale? Golden. It was the last one. Obviously, divine intervention.

My rations are stocked up too. A new candy obsession is the Reese’s thin peanut butter cups made with dark chocolate. Be still my heart. Somehow, I’ve convinced myself they save calories. I write fiction for a reason, people.

We are having crisp weather here in Oregon with lots of sun. But that ends early tomorrow morning with potential snow and freezing rain. Always a good time to stay inside when my neighborhood becomes a skating rink. After all, tonight is the full Snow Moon. But I switched out my dead TV cable box all by myself, so let the romantic comedy movies play!

Glue Book Gorgeous!

There is a new obsession in my life. Glue books! What are those you might ask?

Pretty simple. You glue stuff into books.

You can make them from papers, old print books, expired planners, composition books, a mail envelope, sketchbooks. It’s endless. I started down this rabbit hole after making my own watercolor journal with sewed signatures from a class with artist Laly Mille. In the meantime, I decided I needed to collect holiday magazine images to help when I write my Christmas books. In case that is in July. To put me in a festive mood when it’s scorching outside.

So, one day on YouTube, I stumbled across the Nicole Relax.Cut.Glue. channel. Imagine my surprise to learn she is in Oregon too! Not only is she fun to listen to, but she does beautiful work. Now, I’m a rookie gluer (is that even a word? paster?), but back in 1998 I started my personal journal in an oversized lined book I bought at J.K. Gill. (Still use it) Does anybody remember that stationery store?

I’d pasted several full-page magazine pages in it, featuring a quirky New York bookstore and a Calvin Klein ad. And fortune cookie slips. A drawing of Puss N’ Boots. You know, the usual. Once again, ahead of my time.

Then the two ideas merged.

I could make a Christmas glue book! Turns out folks have been doing this for ages, and I’m late to the party, but I’m all in. I loved the green spiral sketchbook from Michael’s that Nicole used in one video, so I got it on sale, then purchased the glitter glue she uses. (I tried the glue sticks, but I managed to attach myself to everything in my office, so I prefer the liquid glue with the applicator.) And I bought a cake frosting spreader, also from Michael’s, because our Dollar Tree did not have the one she uses.

Next, I was so inspired I MADE a glue book cover out of a 9 x 6-inch mailing envelope based on her tutorial. (See below.) Because heaven knows I have a not so miniature Office Depot in my home office closet. (I love the smell of Post-its in the morning!) Next on my project, I will be cutting paper and using a rubber band to secure the sheets, as she demonstrates.

The deep dark secret that goes along with this new passion is I have WAY TOO MANY magazines, old holiday cards, and pretty calendar pictures in my house. Being a writer and photographer, EVERYTHING gives me an idea or sparks a story. But now, I have a way to put them into themed books and hopefully STOP collecting more scraps. Take the best of the best.

Which reinforces one of my 2025 intentions, since I jettisoned New Year’s resolutions years ago.

Intention number two is: use it up.

That applies to everything from craft paper to postage stamps to freezer food to napkins to chocolate.

Writing about chocolate, there’s a lot of chaos in the world right now, especially in the United States. To those of us on the West Coast, the devastating fires in Los Angeles are affecting many things, including moving adoptable pets to our shelters to relieve the burden on those in California. Organizations did the same thing when the August 8, 2023, Lahaina fires devastated Maui and took so many lives. And the recent California fires affected the Maui Humane Society again when their normal flights of animals to the mainland had to be temporarily curtailed while incoming pets from California were moved north and east.

Plus, huge blessings and thanks to all the firefighters and amazing pilots continuing to battle the fires today. Our contingent of Oregon firefighters is still down there.  A firefighter story is on my future books to write list, has been for a while.  

We are all connected in so many ways. I remind myself to focus on what I can control, be kind to others, and take it one day at a time. Like I did in Army basic training. That’s why rest and relaxation are a real thing in the military. You have to come off the line at some point and take care of yourself.

Glue books are working for me right now. It’s very relaxing.

And walking on my treadmill. And writing.

I started my next book, Forbidden Warrior in the Moonstruck Makeovers series, on New Year’s Eve Day. Seems I can’t go more than thirty days without writing or I get super cranky.
